Masaan is a Bollywood Hindi drama film of the year 2015. The film is directed by Neeraj Ghaywan. The directorial debut film is an Indo-French co-production produced by Drishyam Films, Macassar Productions, Phantom Films, Sikhya Entertainment, Arte France Cinema and Pathé Productions have collaborated together to bring to reality a social drama set in the holy city of Varanasi. The movie features Richa Chaddha and Vicky Kaushal are in lead character with Sanjay Mishra, Pankaj Tripathi, Shweta Tripathi, Vineet Kumar, and Nikhil Sahni in supporting role. Massan has been screened on 19 May 2015 in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. The movie is scheduled to be released on 24 July 2015.

Masaan Director Neeraj Ghaywan previously assisted Anurag Kashyap on Gangs Of Wasseypur. Masaan is his debut movie as a director.

Although Masaan has been screened at the Cannes Film Festival and the film won the FIPRESCI Prize in the Un certain regard section and a ‘Promising Future’ prize (Prix de l’avenir) for debut films.


Masaan movie story:

The story background of Masaan follows two seemingly separate story arcs that eventually converge which set in present day Banaras. Masaan offers a power packed performance woven along an evocative storyline.

In the first coverage of movie tells the story of Devi (Richa Chadda). The film opens with her and her fellow student, Piyush, checking into a hotel room. They are interrupted when the police bursts in, accusing them of indulging in “indecent behaviour”, and even getting a confession from Devi on videotape. Subsequently, Devi and her family are subjected to blackmail by the police, particularly one Inspector Mishra, who demands a hefty bribe from Vidyadhar Pathak, Devi’s father.

In the second coverage concerns about character of Deepak (Vicky Kaushal), a young boy (also from Banaras) who belongs to the untouchable Dom caste and he is an orphan. As a result, he is forced to work on the Ghats of the Ganga, burning bodies on funeral pyres; he longs to escape this atmosphere of marginalization.

Devi poor father Vidyadhar Pathak, who is in charge of a ghat, where offerings are made post-cremation. He is unable to cough up the bribe money. Unapologetic and determined to move on, Devi takes up a job but the sexual advances of co-workers miffs her and Devi wants to run away. She finds solace in Deepak, who assists her father on the ghats along with Jhonta (Nikhil Sahni). But Deepak meets and falls in love with Shaalu (Shweta Tripathi), a young girl who belongs to the upper-class Gupta clan, and their difference in caste leads to familial and societal conflicts.
